Dealing with IP & Copyright (60m)
It's early days on this new frontier, but it's clear that online learning and MOOCs are important and visible initiatives for schools.  With the excitement also comes difficult emerging legal issues such as copyright, ownership, and privacy questions - made even more complex by the rapidly changing and pivoting education and business models in MOOCs.
As a copyright technology and service that provides course readings in MOOCs, SIPX is on the front lines observing schools balance a host of factors in making copyright and IP decisions - from risk and liability; saving or eliminating costs for school and students; enhancing the quality of the course and learning experience; tracking data analytics; to future applications of course assets created in MOOCs.  Copyright lawyer Franny Lee (SIPX co-founder, VP Business Development) will discuss these general observations, share firsthand experiences about real data from real MOOCs, and highlight specific copyright considerations for third-party content that schools would like to draw into their MOOCs, as well as content that is created by the faculty, school or students.

Comparing MOOCs and Blended Classes: Using data mining, psychometrics, and machine learning (60m)

I’ll discuss data analysis from two MIT MOOCs: Circuits (6.002x) and Introductory Physics (8.MRev) on edX.org.  I’ll present results for:

Student behavior: Time spent on each resources by week (for different cohorts of user), how much of various resources are accessed, and how problem-solving strategies differ on tests and homework.  eText use depends on online course structure.

Student Learning: Before and After testing shows certificate earners learn a bit more than students in traditional classes, but less than those in interactive classes.  Will also compare performance of students in MOOC and blended oncampus class.

What Resources Correlate with Learning: Preliminary investigations of how time spent on various resources correlates with learning.
